Artist Statement

When I create art, I take pleasure in removing elements from their original context, allowing the viewer to derive their own meanings and interpretations of my creations. The majority of my work is inspired by the concept of microorganisms found in nature, which I enlarge to a macro scale, thereby extracting the object from its usual context. Traditionally, this is a technique I employ in photography; however, once I incorporated this idea into my ceramic work, it unveiled an entirely new realm for me to investigate with my ceramic sculptures. Texture plays a significant role in my work; I employ various textural styles through carving, impressing, piercing, and the application of additive slip to unify the piece with a corresponding surface texture, enhancing the essence of the form or vessel. In terms of the finishing touches on my creations, I strive to select a glaze that complements the texture of each piece. I enjoy experimenting with various glaze recipes, which include, but are not limited to, crater glazes, running glazes, and breaking glazes. I believe that the process of creating the glazes I utilize is a significant aspect of my artistry; I dedicate time to testing each glaze on all the surface textures I employ to determine which one is the most suitable before finalizing a glaze for each sculpture.
